How To: Apply Foundation

Welcome to the next segment of my How To series… each segment of the series will tackle a category of makeup and cover how to properly apply each one.  For you beauty gurus out there this may be old news, but I’m hoping this will be helpful for beginners or those who have always dreaded makeup application.  Stay tuned as we work our way over the whole face!

Today’s topic is foundation.  There are so many types of foundation and ways to apply it… I will try to touch on the main ones!

How To Apply Foundation www.jilliandanielle.com

There are countless different formulas of foundation, but most of them can be divided into these categories: Liquid, Cream, Mousse, Cushion, Powder and Airbrush. Foundations can also be oil-based or oil-free, which you will want to consider when selecting one appropriate for your skin type.

Liquid foundations can range in viscosity from thin and runny, to very thick.  What consistency of liquid foundation you choose will depend mostly on personal preference, but in general, the thinner the formula the more natural looking and seamless your coverage will be.

Cream foundations are typically sold in compacts or sticks, and have a very thick (often oil-based) texture.  Cream foundations are usually most suitable for those with drier or more mature skin.

Mousse foundations are usually packaged in tubes and have an airy, mousse-like consistency.  I think the finish of mousse foundations can be quite unpredictable… ranging from light and sheer, to thick and cakey.

Cushion foundation is fairly new to the game and is one of the many ingenious makeup products to come from the Korean makeup phenomenon.  A compact houses a sponge which is soaked with a liquid foundation.  Pressing the sponge will release the product to be applied to the face.

Those that love powder foundations are pretty dedicated followers.  While I have found that it does not suit my oily skin, it is loved by many for its light breathable texture.

Airbrush foundations produce a flawless finish that make it popular with brides.  Precision airbrushing is often done in a salon, but at home options are available.

There are countless tools and methods you can use to apply foundation, ranging from your fingers all the way to elaborate mechanical devices.  Choose the device you will use based on your desired finished look!

Fingers – This is the most common method to apply foundation and probably the one most of us learned first.  This is actually my least favorite application method for three reasons: it can result in smears and fingerprints in the finished look, it takes longer, and unless you are diligent about washing your hands, it can be a bit un-hygienic and messy.

Should you choose to use your fingers, thin to medium liquids should produce the best results. If you have only ever used your fingers to apply foundation, I would suggest you give one of the methods below a shot!

Brushes – Using a brush is my personal favorite way to apply my foundation!  Don’t think that you are limited to using a brush only with powder foundations… I love my using my Real Techniques Expert Face Brush with my favorite liquid foundations.  There are many different types of foundation brushes, but the most common have short, densely packed, soft bristles for smooth, comfortable blending.

In my opinion, brushes are the fastest way to apply foundation, and also the most versatile as they can be used for any type of foundation!  Powder foundation must be applied exclusively with a brush.

Sponges – Beauty Blenders have become a makeup staple over the years, and there are now many similar, cheaper options available as well.  Don’t confuse these beauty sponges with those small triangular sponges our moms always used.  Beauty sponges are somewhat egg shaped, and are meant to be used wet.

Beauty sponges can be used with almost any type of foundation (except powder), and create the most seamless finish.  They make the most noticeable difference with thicker foundations and concealers.  They are also great for those with dry skin, as the dampness from the sponge will help diminish the appearance of dry patches.

Airbrushing – Airbrush foundations come in an aerosol can, or in professional cases, a mechanical sprayer.  For at-home application, airbrush foundations are best dispensed on the center of the face or on a mixing palette, and then blended in with a brush or beauty sponge.  This will prevent you from airbrushing your hair and walls as well!

For professionals trained in airbrushing, they will spray the foundation directly onto your face, often applying additional layers of color and contour as well.

I hope you enjoyed these little tips for the perfect foundation application!  If you have any suggestions for foundations, either formulas or application, please comment!  I would love to hear!

Product Empties!

I love product empties posts!  I think it is a great way to see what items people actually love, finish, and would repurchase.  I don’t know why I never thought to do one before… I am now kicking myself for throwing away all those empty packages!

Product Empties www.jilliandanielle.com

Anyway, I still have few empties floating around, and I am here to share what I thought of them and if I would buy them again.

This is at least the fourth one of these I have purchased.  I just find it to be the perfect color for my fair skin… not to dark and not to orange.  I feel a little ripped off every time I buy it because you get such a small amount for the price, but it remains a favorite.

Would I repurchase?  Yes, but I would love to find a less expensive dupe.  Any suggestions?

Product Empties Benefit Hoola www.jilliandanielle.com

I bought this blush for my wedding and loved it.  It gives a lovely glow to the skin without ever registering as shimmery.  This is a very light shade, so you have to build it up quite a bit to get a good payoff.  It would only be suitable for the fairest of skintones.

Would I repurchase?  Yes, but in a darker shade.

Product Empties Hourglass Blush www.jilliandanielle.com

I use this daily.  It is an awesome daily conditioner for coarse or damaged hair.  You can’t beat a $3.00 conditioner that works!

Would I repurchase?  Obviously, yes! 🙂

Product Empties Aussie 3 Minute Mirable www.jilliandanielle.com

This is by far my favorite serum I have ever tried!  I love the smell… not only does it have and amazing citrus scent, but I does not have the strange odor that many Vitamin C products can have.  It packs a hefty punch of Vitamin C, and absorbs perfectly into the skin.

Would I repurchase?  Yes

Product Empties Ole Henriksen Truth Serum www.jilliandanielle.com

This was the lipstick I wore on my wedding day.  It is a perfect “your lips but better” shade.  I prefer it best in the winter, but I think I can be worn all year long.

Would I repurchase?  Yes

Product Empties MAC Syrup www.jilliandanielle.com

This was a recent discovery, and one that I was surprised that I liked.  I am typically not a fan of full cover foundations, but this one was surprisingly weightless.  Great for long days or big events!

Would I repurchase?  Possibly… still not my first choice for daily use, but great to have on hand if you love a full coverage base.

Product Empties MUF Ultra HD www.jilliandanielle.com

This is a great texture spray for beginners.  It has a very light finish and is really tough to overuse.  It has a pleasant smell, and a cool funky design.

Would I repurchase?  Possibly… I liked this, but am interested in trying some sprays with a bit more texture.

Product Empties Amika Un.Done www.jilliandanielle.com

This has been a favorite for many years.  It gives a noticeable shine to the hair without leaving a residue or weighing it down.  It is great to spray on your finished style, or can be applied to dry hair before styling and your hot tools will glide through like a dream!

Would I repurchase?  Yes, I have been through many bottles of this!

Product Empties Aquage Beyond Shine www.jilliandanielle.com

This is a hair mask that you wear overnight, and while I liked that it left no residue on my pillow, I wasn’t overwhelmed by the results.  I did notice a difference, but nothing that blew me away for the price.  For my hair, I get better results with an in-shower deep conditioner.

Would I repurchase?  No

Product Empties Living Proof Night Cap www.jilliandanielle.com

I received this generous sample and was excited to try it as I had heard such great things about the Advanced Night Repair oil.  This was a lovely cream with a beautiful, light consistency… I loved how smoothly I glided under they eyes without tugging.  However, I’m not sure how much hydration it actually brought to the party.  I think this would be perfect for younger eyes, or those with few hydration issues.

Would I repurchase?  No, this was a lovely cream, but I would choose something with a little richer texture.

Product Empties Estee Lauder Eye Cream www.jilliandanielle.com

I hope you enjoyed exploring this roundup of my trash, and possibly got some ideas of new things to try.  Now I can actually throw these things away!  What are some of your most used beauty items?

Weekly Roundup – Haircuts & How To’s

Happy Friday!  This post is linked with 5 on Friday and High Five For Friday.  Be sure to head over to their sites for some more fun Friday posts!

Weekly Roundup Haircuts and How To's www.jilliandanielle.com

This week has been summed up by one word… Olympics!  I am a HUGE Olympics fan, and I would basically watch it all evening if Nate wasn’t getting sick of it.  I definitely laid claim to the TV Tuesday and Thursday nights for the gymnastics Team and All-Around events… highlight of the games for me!  GO USA!

Diet began Monday and after basically wanting to chew my arm off the first day, it’s been going pretty well.  Lots of protein, fruits and veggies, and keeping the sugars and processed foods to a minimum.  Have you tried these TURKEY BURGERS from Trader Joe’s?  I season mine up well before cooking with salt, pepper, garlic powder and a smoky rub… very yummy!

I am finally headed to get a haircut tomorrow.  I had to switch stylists, and trying to select a new stylist with no recommendations is tough!  Combine that with the craziness of everyday life, and it’s been over a year since I’ve been to the salon!  My hair is in the worst shape it’s ever been, so I am surely looking forward to an afternoon of pampering.

Have you all tried any of the “gel effect” polishes?  The only one I have tried is the Miracle Gel from Sally Hansen, and I’m kinda on the fence about it.  Everyone is talking up the new ones from Essie, but I HATE their regular polishes so I am hesitant to try.  Any suggestions?

How To: Apply Face & Eye Primers

Today I am beginning a new series… each segment of the series will tackle a category of makeup and cover how to properly apply each one.  For you beauty gurus out there this may be old news, but I’m hoping this will be helpful for beginners or those who have always dreaded makeup application.  Stay tuned as we work our way over the whole face!

Today’s topic is primers.  In order to condense things a little we will cover face primers, eye primers and setting sprays all in this segment.  Even if you haven’t liked them in the past, I think most people can benefit from primers… it’s simply a matter of finding the right formula for you!

When face primers first appeared on the market, they were almost all a clear, silicone-like gel with a slightly matte finish (think Smashbox Photo Finish)… and this is still a great option!  However, primer formulas have expanded and changed so much to include a variety of formulas and finishes, and to suit many skin types.  There are options to minimize pores, to promote longevity, to hydrate and to add a luminous finish!

Whatever formula you choose, the technique is almost always the same.  Apply face primer with your fingers (this works much better than a brush), and lightly smooth it over your skin.  If you prefer, you can apply only to areas of concern such as your T-zone.

The trick to face primer is not to over blend.  If you rub your primer in until you can’t feel it anymore, you are losing most of its effectiveness.  You should feel as though you are leaving a light layer over the skin… this will result in the best lasting power and reduction of pores.

Allow your primer to sit for just a few seconds before applying your foundation.

Eye primers differ from face primers immensely and are not meant to be interchangeable.  While face primers are meant to provide smoothness with a slight hold, eye primers are thicker and provide a very tacky finish for shadows to cling to.  Some primers have more hold than others, and some like Nars Pro Prime are more suitable for oily eyelids.

Apply eye primer to your eyelid with your finger, and blend it in with gentle patting.  Try to avoid rubbing in your eye primer to prevent pulling on the delicate skin around the eye.  Extending your eye primer application slightly past your lid is a great idea if you will be sporting winged liner!

Setting Sprays can seem like a bit of a princess product, but there are a lot of skin types that can really benefit from the effects of a setting spray.  For my oily skin, I love the Urban Decay De-Slick Setting Spray!  It increases the staying power of my makeup by locking things into place, and also keeps oil at bay.  It sort of acts like a hairspray for the face, but still feels lovely and cooling!

Those with dry, dehydrated skin can benefit from a hydrating mist.  More so than hold, these sprays provide a burst of extra moisture.  This is a great way to re-hydrate the skin throughout the day without disturbing your makeup!

July Favorites

I suppose I should really call these my Summer Favorites, since I missed June’s post entirely.  This seems to be a collection of several of my hot weather essentials.  Here’s what I’ve been loving for the last month (or two)!

July 2016 Favorites www.jilliandanielle.com

Like I mentioned in a recent Weekly Roundup, there is something about summer that makes me reach for lip balms all the time!  I just don’t want anything heavy on my lips in this hot summer weather.

The one I have been reaching for the most is the Mango Lip Butter from Korres. It has good color payoff for a balm, and provides great hydration!  Unfortunately, I think Mango has been discontinued, but they have lots of other shades to choose from!

Korres Lip Butter www.jilliandanielle.com

If I choose to wear a lipstick in the summer I have been reaching for this spunky shade from Tarte!  I would never think that this bright coral would flatter my fair skin, but it does.  I would call it the perfect orange-y shade for people afraid of orange!  The finish is comfortable and perfect for summer!

Tarte Coral Blossom www.jilliandanielle.com

Most people are familiar with Heavenly, as it is one of Victoria’s Secret’s most popular scents.  But on it’s own it’s a little heavy for my taste.  Lately I have been layering it with my Tory Burch perfume and loving the combination!  It is summery and beachy and lasts all day!

Tory Burch and VS Heavenly www.jilliandanielle.com

Pardon the chipped perfume bottle. I dropped it on a granite countertop, and could have screamed when I saw the chip! I’m just thankful the entire bottle didn’t break.

I received this mascara as a sample quite some time ago, and never tried it.  I was never particularly drawn to the Buxom brand, and just kept reaching for others instead.  When I finally picked this up, I was blown away by the fluttery length it provided!  Lashes are lengthened and separated for that perfect fluttery lash, without appearing thin or spidery.

The packaging of the sample is the worst I have ever experienced.  It becomes dirty within days, with mascara coming out as you close the bottle!  I can only hope the full size is not the same or I would struggle to repurchase.

The brush on this thing is insane! Huge!

Summer makes me crave fruit, and I make sure I have some in the house at all times!  Peaches and strawberries are favorites, and are part of my lunch every day.  Yum!

There are times when I am on Pinterest a lot, and times when I am not at all. The oppressively hot weather this July means more time indoors and more time to Pinterest!  I pin Makeup & Beauty, Decorating & Design, Fashion, Planning, and more!  If you love Pinterest come check me out… I love to find new Pinners to follow!  You can see all my Pinterest boards HERE.

I hope you enjoyed this collection of favorites… maybe you were even inspired to try something new!  Comment below and let me know what your top, must-have summer essential is… I would love to know!  Happy Monday!
