A New Lipstick Discovery From Burt’s Bees

I was inspired by Kate’s post on the Burt’s Bees lipsticks and decided to give them a try.  I have never been drawn to the Burt’s Bees brand as far as cosmetics go and would not have tried these without her recommendation!

I was in the market for a brighter color, so I grabbed the shade Fuchsia Flood.  It was a little more muted than I expected from the swatch on the package, but it was still a bold, blue based pink.  Blue-toned pinks and reds have always been flattering for my skin tone and I loved how this looked!

These lipsticks are slightly sheer, but still pack a punch of color.  I consider them a demi-matte finish… not matte, but they don’t register as “shiny’ either.  They are comfortable to wear and moisturizing as well!  They are fairly long wearing for a moisturizing formula and leave a stain on the lips as they fade.  I was thrilled with the stain this shade left behind and was so impressed that my lips were not left feeling dry.

These Burt’s Bees lipsticks come in 14 shades and retail for $9.00 (I got mine for $8.47 at Walmart!).  I have been so happy with the combination of vibrancy, comfort and longevity that these lipsticks provide and I am excited to try more!  Possibly I will give their fun red shade a shot!

Have you tried the Burt’s Bees lipsticks?  What is your favorite drugstore lipstick formula?

My Favorite Blogs Edition 2 – A Model Recommends

Welcome to this second installment of my Favorite Blogs! I hope you enjoyed the last one, and had some time to check out Kate’s awesome blog!  For round two, I have another beauty blogger, but one with a totally different aesthetic.  Enjoy!

My Favorite Blogs Edition 2 - A Model Recommends www.jilliandanielle.com

Ruth Crilly from A Model Recommends

A Model Recommends is primarily a beauty blog with a hefty dose of lifestyle posts thrown in.  The real attraction of A Model Recommends is Ruth’s skilled writing style and fabulous sense of humor!  Of all the blogs I read, this is the one that most often has me laughing out loud… whatever your interest in beauty, I’m sure you will enjoy her posts.

Ruth Crilly, the blogger behind A Model Recommends, is a fashion model from the UK and began her blog after discovering her love of makeup during photo shoots and fashion shows.  When Ruth enrolled in college her intent was to practice law.  She began modeling for some part time income, and as her modeling career grew, found herself unable to walk away from the exciting opportunities she was being offered.

Ruth and her husband had an adorable baby girl a year ago, and in addition to some pretty hilarious posts, this has also inspired her second blog… the maternity and motherhood blog The Uphill.  I’m sure this would be an awesome read for moms with little ones!

A Model Recommends is worth a look… if nothing else, just for a good chuckle.  I do not, however, want to diminish the quality of the beauty content she shares.  Her recommendations are spot on and she goes to great lengths to properly research products to make sure her conclusions are accurate.  Great skincare and makeup tips!

Head on over and say Hi to Ruth, I know you will love her blog!

How To Do Your Own Bridal Makeup

It’s June and wedding season is officially upon us!

For my wedding day I did my own makeup.  I am super OCD about my makeup, and while I’m sure a makeup artist would have done a great job, I like to be in control.  Not to mention, it can be a great way to cut costs!

How To Do Your Own Bridal Makeup www.jilliandanielle.com

I am not a professional makeup artist, but I worked in the wedding industry for almost five years and I love makeup!  So whether you are just feeling creative, or are a bride on a budget, keep reading for my best tips for creating that perfect bridal look!

Be sure you do some trial runs before the big day.  Try out the colors you want to wear, and test your base products for longevity to make sure they last all day.  Apply the whole look, and wear it for at least 12 hours to make sure everything will stay put and look fresh.

If you are not happy with the longevity of your foundation, choose another.  Head to the makeup counter, tell them about your skin type and ask for samples of your top choices.  This is what I did and is how I ended up choosing Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet for my wedding day.

Above all, be sure you feel comfortable with the look you choose.  If you always wear minimal makeup, now may not be the time to go for a super-smokey eye and red lip!  I wanted to look like myself on my wedding day… just slightly more glam.  That being said, if you love an over-the-top look… go for it!  You do you.

There are several products that can help extend the life of your makeup.  Most of these I use daily, but even if you don’t, I consider them a must for special events.

Face Primer – This will give you a smoother foundation application, as well as keep oil at bay and increase your wear time.

Eye Primer – A more tacky finish, this will help to lock shadows in place and prevent fading.

Make-up Setting Spray – This may sound unnecessary, but setting sprays really do make a difference!  They basically act as hairspray for the face and keep things fresher longer.

Powder – Even if you don’t regularly wear powder, it goes a long way to lock in your foundation and keep it from fading.  Don’t love the powder look?  Opt for a translucent powder (like Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder) or brightening powder (like Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder) to set the makeup and give a luminous look.

Some of the ingredients in sunscreens can react negatively with flash photography, and can cause a white or reflective cast in photos.  Since you’ll be taking lots of photos, give the sunscreen a pass unless you will be spending all day in the sun.  Look out… lots of foundations contain SPF, so pay attention to that as well.

Photography will inevitably wash you out a little, especially if you are indoors, so apply a little more blush, lipstick and eyeshadow than usual.  It may feel like you are overdoing it, but remember that it will fade some throughout the day and that a lot of people will be looking at you from a distance.  Besides, you want to look fabulous in your pictures, right?

You want to know the true secret of a professional makeup application?  Blend everything well.  There shouldn’t be any harsh lines, and the colors should blend seamlessly into your skin.  Are you still using those little sponge applicators that come with some eyeshadows?  Throw them out now!!!  Get yourself some good brushes and you’ll be amazed at the ease of application.  I love Real Techniques brushes for a starter set… great quality at a perfect price!

Below are some of my favorite brushes and how I use them.

I hope you enjoyed my tips and tricks for a perfect makeup application that will last all day!  Whether your look is simple and fresh or vibrant and glam, these ideas will help you navigate your wedding beauty routine and achieve the look you want.

May 2016 Favorites

It’s favorites time again folks!  I can’t believe another month has gone by so quickly, and that it’s time to round up some of my favorite things from the last thirty days.  This month is heavy on the beauty items… here’s what I’ve been loving this May:

May 2016 Favorites www.jilliandanielle.com

Thanks to a recommendation from Katie at A Cup of Tea, I picked up this cream eye-shadow from ELF and fell in love!  It has a super smooth, almost soft, consistency and a rich bronze color.  It lasts all day and does NOT crease as some cream shadows are prone to do.  These Smudge Pots only come in a limited shade range, and the pot could be a little bigger for comfortable use, but since I only paid a whopping THREE DOLLARS for this I have no complaints!

This pretty watch was a gift from my husband for Christmas, and I wear it so much!  I love that it can be dressy or casual, and it goes with almost any outfit.  I have some pink pearl studs that I love to wear with it, and I think rose gold is perfect for summer!  This is my second Relic watch, and they are great quality and last forever.

I was in the market for a new sunless tanner.  I knew I wanted a drugstore option (I’m not spending $30-$40 on a bottle of tanner), and randomly decided to try the LA Tan Sunless Tanner.  I am so pleased with the results!  It has very minimal odor (in fact, my hubby who hates that ‘tanner’ smell, gave his approval), leaves a beautiful color, fades evenly and lasts well.  I would warn that this is not for sunless tanner “newbies”… the mousse dries quite fast, and must be applied smoothly and quickly!  But the finished result is a professional, natural looking tan.

I won’t talk about this too much, as I wrote a full review on these last week, but these have definitely been a favorite!  The color lasts all day long, even overnight if not removed, and the gloss keeps my lips moisturized all day!  This is the perfect option for long workdays or all day events.  You can read my detailed review of these products here.  The color below is Aussie Rose.

This line of polishes from Sally Hansen is really starting to become a favorite!  I would not compare these to a salon gel manicure… they will not last that long.  But I usually get a solid week out of this polish, where most others will chip with 3-4 days.  This shade Red Eye is just the perfect summer red!  It contains enough blue tones to look good on my fair skin, and is still bright and vibrant.  I am planning on this being a much used color over the next few months!

SeneGence Liquid Lipcolor Review

I was recently introduced to the LipSense products by SeneGence.  This is a direct marketing brand sold by consultants, which I had never heard of prior to being introduced to it by a coworker.

Lipsense Liquid Lip Color and Gloss www.jilliandanielle.com

Typically I hesitate to recommend direct marketing brands, because I prefer to be able to go out and purchase products without the hassle and pressure of going through a consultant.  However, I was totally impressed with these products and think they would be worth seeking out!

Bonus… if you don’t have a consultant near you, you can be set up with one through their website and order online as well.

The SeneGence company sells an entire range of beauty and skincare products, but their lip products are definitely their best-selling items!  Their liquid lipcolor and gloss combos are said to last at least 18 hours and that is absolutely true!

Liquid lipsticks are a huge trend right now and I have definitely tried several long lasting lip products in the past.  All of them left my lips dry and flakey after only a few hours and while long lasting, none actually made it all day.

I followed my consultants instructions, applying the LipSense color first in three thin layers to clean lips.  The formula is very thin, almost watery, but builds to a nice color after the third layer.  I allowed the color to dry for five seconds between each layer and before applying the gloss.

The LipSense gloss will provide moisture to your lips and give a super comfortable finish. The formula of the gloss is specifically designed to work with the lip color versus other brands, so you will need to purchase both.

My biggest concern when trying these products is that they would be drying to my lips.  I suffer from chapped lips anyway, and had never found a longwear product I could use.

My lips made it all day without any discomfort or flakiness, and the condition of my lips has actually improved as I have used this!  I doubt any other liquid lip color can claim that!

The gloss is shiny and moisturizing without being sticky, so there is no danger of your hair getting stuck to your lips if you are caught in a strong wind!  The finish stays fresh and does not gather into lines as it wears.

Lipsense Liquid Lip Color in Aussie Rose www.jilliandanielle.com

The shade Aussie Rose after eight hours of wear (the gloss has been reapplied).  This color is photographing slightly light… on my fair complexion it is a mid-tone rose shade.

The gloss will need to be reapplied a couple of times throughout the day, but the color stays put until I remove it at night.  SeneGence sells a remover, but my consultant recommended I use witch hazel instead as a super effective and cheap option!

The LipSense color comes in 81 (!!!) shades and the gloss in 11 shades so you can create countless color options!  They even have a matte gloss if you’re not a fan of the glossy look.  For my first order I chose the shade Aussie Rose with the clear gloss, and I am excited to order more!

The lip colors sell for $25.00 and the glosses for $20.00 so they are not the cheapest option on the market, but one shade will last up to six months with daily use and the convenience of not reapplying is a huge selling point!

I am a surprising fan of the LipSense line… I will admit that I did not expect to be. To find a lip color that is comfortable AND stays put all day is super rare , and I am happy to spend on these items that perform so well.

If you are interested in trying LipSense, check out their website to find a consultant near you!

Have you tried LipSense?  If so, what are your favorite colors?  I would love suggestions!
