Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet… Is It Really Perfect?

I don’t typically review luxury products on my blog because I like the things I share to be reasonably attainable for most people.  At $48.00 a bottle, this foundation could be considered quite pricey.  However, whenever I try to convince myself that I don’t need this, I once again marvel at how much better my skin looks when I wear it.  And then I ask myself “Isn’t good skin every day worth it?”.  It’s like I have a little makeup angel and makeup demon on each shoulder, trying to convince me what to do.

I originally purchased Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet for my wedding because I wanted natural, seamless coverage that would still help mattify my oily skin. I got a sample to try before the big day, and it ended up making the cut!

I find that most mattifying foundations are thick and lack moisture in order to “soak up” any oily patches on the skin. The problem with this is, the foundation will cling to any patches that are not as oily and look cakey.  Plus, since the foundation is thick, it can begin to separate in areas where the most oil is coming through.

According to Chanel, this foundation claims to be “ Lightweight and oil-free, the unique formula of this fluid foundation provides a long lasting, matte-velvet finish.  Soft -focus pigments smooth and perfect the skin.”

In my opinion, Perfection Lumiere really delivers on so many levels.  It is a thin liquid so it provides the breathable, natural coverage that most girls with oily skin think they can’t attain.  It applies beautifully and quickly with a brush, so even in a rush the finish is excellent.  Even though it gives such a healthy and plump look to the skin, it still manages to magically keep oil at bay… all the while keeping an even finish and never separating .  It lasts all day and wears evenly, never patchy or cakey.  I have to re-powder only once throughout the day (which is much less than with other bases), but the foundation stays seamless till the end.

This is the foundation after six hours of wear. I used blotting papers once, but did not re-powder. I was pretty impressed with that!  Pardon the stray hairs… don’t know what was going on there!

Because of the soft, silky application I believe that even those with combination skin could really love this foundation.  For ladies with dry skin, Chanel’s Vitalumiere Aqua may be a better choice.

If you are interested in trying this high-end foundation I definitely recommend going to a Chanel counter and getting color matched or even asking for a sample.  Any counter should provide you with a sample large enough to try for a few days.  My shade is 12 Beige Rose.

At the end of the day, I have decided that it is worth the extra cost for me to feel so good about my skin… I am getting ready to purchase my third bottle!  It feels decadent (and maybe slightly high maintenance), but for me Perfection Lumiere Velvet is as close to perfection as I’ve come.

What is your favorite foundation?  Do you prefer affordable or luxury?

  1. Chanel really does make phenomenal foundations. It’s the one makeup thing I splurge on then try to save on other things like mascara. I find I need so little foundation with Chanel that it does last a while.

  3. I would love for you to do a review on Luminess Air airbrush foundation. I’ve always been curious about that. Seems like the whole “no touch” idea would work really well.
