Homemade Chia Drinks

I know these have been a thing for a while, but I have recently fallen in love with the Mamma Chia drinks.  It seems that opinions are very divided on these.  I am crazy about them and my husband absolutely hates them!  They are organic, fruity drinks with 100% juice and chia seeds.  The chia seeds give the drink the consistency of half set Jello… which I think is kinda fun!

Chia seeds are considered a super food.  They are extremely high in Omega-3’s and daily fiber.  They are also a rich source of the B vitamins thiamine and niacin, and the dietary minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc.  All things that are very good for you!

I could drink these every day, but only buy them as a special treat because of the almost-three-dollars-a-piece price tag.  I came across a Pinterest post on how to make these at home and started doing some research.  I ended up following a Youtube tutorial by Rachel Talbott to try it myself and was amazed at how well it turned out!  I purchased a 2 pound bag of organic chia seeds at Costco for around eight dollars.

You need to soften the chia seeds with water before adding them to the juice or the seeds will clump together badly.  In a small bowl, I combined 2 1/2 tablespoons of chia seeds with 2 tablespoons of water and stirred until they were no longer dry and had a jelly texture.  The seeds will absorb the water very quickly.  Add another 2 tablespoons of water and stir till absorbed, then repeat again until you have incorporated 7-8 tablespoons total of water.

Now it’s time to add your juice!  This is where you can have lots of fun and try a bunch of different combinations.  Recently I have been using a mixture of V8 Splash, orange juice and cranberry.  Of course it is best if you use 100% juice, but you can use any juice combinations you like.  You just want your juice mixture to total about 8 ounces.

Once you have your chia seeds absorbed in the water, add it to a shaker bottle with your juices and shake well.  At this point you could drink it right away (which I often do), but I think it is better if you let it sit a few hours or even overnight.
