What I Have Learned After One Year of Blogging

I have now been blogging for over a year.  My blog is still small and I haven’t “made it big”, but I am enjoying it more than ever!  I am not a pro by any means and I do not mean this to instruct, because I don’t feel qualified yet to do so.  But rather this is just a chat between friends about a few surprises and lessons I have had along the way.

Blogging Takes Longer Than You Think

And editing takes longer than you think, and pictures take longer than you think, and social media takes longer than you think.  Am I repeating myself?  I quickly realized that being a daily blogger really is a full time job.  I am currently posting twice a week because that is all I can manage with another full time job.  And that’s ok.  Commit to a schedule that’s manageable for you, so you have time to love what you do.

Google Is Your Friend

So much is involved in setting up a blog and unfortunately there is no master handbook on “How To Blog”.  I had to teach myself (heaven knows I’m still learning) and I learned most of it from Google.  Just jump in!   PS… Be sure to read up a little on the legalities of blogging… especially of using any pictures or images that are not your own!

Photography Is Hard… And Important

What do successful blogs have in common?  They almost all have gorgeous photos.  In fact, I have seen blogs with very little text and mostly photos.  I am not naturally a great photographer… it does not come easy to me.  And while my pictures have gotten better since I began, improving my photography is still my biggest goal for my blog.

Interacting With Other Blogs Is Important

One of the best things you can do to promote your own blog is to interact with other bloggers.  This is the thing that I struggle most making time for.  Not only is blogging really about the ‘community’, but interacting with other blogs gets your name out to a whole new audience.  For example, yesterday I commented on another blog and included my website on their comment form.  That same day I got three visitors directed from that site!  Plus, the more people see your name and interact with you, the more they will want to know what you’re about!

Be Brave

This is so hard to do. When I first started my blog (and sometimes still) I would hesitate to tell people about it.  Some people just don’t ‘get’ blogging, which is fine, but fear caused me to shy away from sharing it.  It is always hard to put your art out there for people to see, no matter what it is.  But if you don’t share your blog it will never grow.  Be Brave!

Hopefully if you are a new blogger this will help you know you are not alone.  Even if your blog grows slowly, like mine, you have to enjoy what you are doing.  I get excited over every single comment and pageview!  If you are not a blogger, perhaps this will give you a little peek into what we’re all about!

Do you have growing blog?  If so, comment below with your site address and say Hi!  Let’s help each other grow!

It goes without saying, but please comment only with appropriate blogs so we can keep this fun for everyone.  Inappropriate or spam links will be blocked.

  3. I could have written this word for word! I enjoy blogging so much but wow is it a lot of work! Definitely tough to balance it while working full-time and ensuring you spend time with family and friends. Much of my family and friends also aren’t aware that I write a blog – I feel so uncomfortable wth them reading it…but at some point I’m going to have to spill the beans. I find it’s not so bad when I do it slowly and mention it to a few people at a time.

Great post and congratulations on your one year blogiversary! 🙂

    • Thank you! I totally agree! But the people I have shared it with have all been so supportive… I remind myself of that whenever I feel reluctant to talk about it. Most people find it really interesting!
